Greater Steps Scholars Receives $24,000 in Grant Funding to Directly Benefit Students Living in Charlotte Subsidized Housing

Funds from Canopy Housing Foundation, Ally Charitable Grants, and Truist Foundation will provide students with much-needed mentoring and career readiness skills

Charlotte, NC (October 2020) — Greater Steps Scholars, formerly known as the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund, announces that the organization has received three grants totaling over $24,000 from three foundations — the Canopy Housing Foundation, Ally Charitable Grants, and the Truist Foundation.

Funds from the grants will be used to bolster Greater Steps’ Career Readiness and Mentor Program, a series of workshops and resources that concentrate on the skills and knowledge needed for Scholars to confidently take the next step in their professional journeys. In these workshops, students learn about important skills such as resume and cover letter writing, mock interviewing, professionalism in the workplace, building social media acumen, and more.

“We are so incredibly appreciative of these grant funds,” says Aisha Strothers, Executive Director of Greater Steps Scholars. “These much-needed funds come at a time when we — like many nonprofits in the Charlotte area and across the country — are struggling financially as COVID-19 continues to affect operations, fundraising, and outreach, so these funds are especially important right now.”

The awards include:

  • ● A $1,500 award from the Canopy Housing Foundation’s 2020 Community Grants Program, the charitable arm of the Charlotte Regional Realtor Board of Directors;

  • ● A video production package from Kim Brattain Media valued at over $2,500;

  • ● $10,000 from Ally Charitable Grants, a fund focused reducing economic mobility barriers for individuals, families, and communities, and

  • ● $10,000 from the Truist Foundation, who selected Greater Steps Scholars as a nonprofit that aligns with their focus areas of leadership development, economic mobility, thriving communities, and educational equity.
